Designing a Digital Platform for Electric Mining Vehicles

As the mining machine sector grows, it is imperative to differentiate by providing innovative tools for customers.

One of the ways that Prairie Machine’s Rokion does this is by providing TechCenter, a dashboard that helps internal support staff and external clients to manage their equipment fleets.

PROJECT SCOPE

UX design lead, Illustration

TechCenter lets users to track the status of their mining vehicles and tools at mining sites.

I begun working with Rokion to revamp the structure and UI of the TechCenter web app to allow users to get at-a-glance information on their fleet, while also serving a simple way to navigate to all of Rokion’s pages.

In addition, Rokion wanted to integrate their store into TechCenter, providing a more seamless experience for users to buy parts if a maintenance issue arose.

Users

Two distinct user groups use the TechCenter platform. First, Rokion customers use the platform to learn and manage their equipment through an interactive knowledge base, support portal, and historical reporting engine.

All this information is available to Rokion technicians who are then able to provide a high level of service to their customers.

Challenge

With a software as highly specialized as TechCenter, the customer base was quite small, and each customer was using TechCenter in a different way. This provided a unique challenge that Rokion didn't really know how a client user would use TechCenter, however we had a good idea of pain points that users of Rokion vehicles experienced in their day-to-day operation of vehicles.

Maintenance

With a large fleet of vehicle, it was often difficult to know when a vehicle should undergo routine maintenance

Tracking

Ensuring that vehicles were in the proper place + functioning as intended in real-time

Purchasing

When parts break or maintenance is required, provide access to the parts required for replacement or repair.

Foundations

I created a brand system beginning with the root components + tokens (colours, spacing, iconography), building up to full-page layouts. As we got a feel for UI, I also worked with the Rokion team to map out the new platform infrastructure to handle the use-cases of their largest mining operators.

I created a cohesive iconography system that helped to visualize the Rokion vehicles, tools, and resources for TechCenter

Using Rokion's brand colours, I created a colour system to report status of vehicles, that would provide operators to tell at-a-glance insights into their fleets

From any status page, operators would be able to access technical documents and shop for parts specific to their vehicle model to speed up their ability to diagnose and troubleshoot technical issues.

Live tracking with dashboards

Rokion's customers often have large numbers of mining vehicles and tools that need to be monitored in real-time for system issues. Each moment a tool is out of commission can translate into thousands of dollars in lost mining revenue. For this reason it was imperative that we create dashboards that allowed mining operations managers to get at-a-glance insights on the health of their equipment and to diagnose and repair major mechanical or software issues as quickly as possible.
